2022 CHAN Tournament: Ghana Get 3 Free Points
The Black Galaxies of Ghana have been awarded three points following the absence of Morocco from the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Ghana will not be the only country to benefit from their absence but also Sudan and Madagascar.
This decision was taken by the organising committee of CHAN following a meeting convened on Monday in Algiers.
Ghana, Morocco, Sudan and Madagascar form Group C of CHAN 2022.
The meeting to determine Morocco’s destiny was held after they missed Match number 5 of Group C against Sudan.
The Committee decided that the Moroccan National team will lose all its matches by 3-0 putting the remaining teams to an advantage.
In addition to that, it said the 1st and 2nd classified teams from Group C will qualify for the next round of the competition at the end of the phase of the group matches.
Also, Match number 22 involving Sudan and Madagascar initially scheduled to be played in Oran has been moved to Constantine without any change in the date and kick-off time.
Finally, the committee will submit the case to the CAF Disciplinary Committee for further examination.
Morocco withdrew from the tournament after being refused a direct flight by host nation Algeria due to diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
African news reports that Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco in 2021, in a dispute over the Western Sahara, a territory annexed by Morocco in 1975. The row meant all direct flights between the two countries were suspended.
Reports indicate that the Algerian government rejected Morocco’s request for the team to fly there directly on Morocco’s national airline.
Ghana was scheduled to play against Morocco on January 24.
Ghana’s first match in the tournament against Madagascar ended up in a 2:1 defeat.
Ghana will play against Sudan on Thursday, January 17.
