2010 World Cup Penalty Miss Will Live With Me Forever- Asamoh Gyan

Former Ghana Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, says the regret of missing a crucial penalty for Ghana in the 2010 World Cup against Uruguay will forever live with him.

In an interview with former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand, Gyan said the penalty was an opportunity to punish the wickedness of Luiz Suárez.

However, it didn’t go as expected as he missed the spot kick.

“He cheated, yes, but he became a hero. I am the one who had the opportunity to punish him, and I didn’t. That is what hurts the most. It’s not about Suárez anymore; it’s about the fact that I didn’t finish the job. It’s something I will live with for the rest of my life.”

He recalled how he took 20 penalties at training and scored all 20 a day before the said game, but failed to reproduce that on the pitch.

Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss during the quarterfinals stage against Uruguay could have secured Ghana’s historic spot in the semifinals.

It attracted widespread criticism and backlash.
