15 Structures Razed Down By Fire at Circle

A devastating fire has razed at least 15 structures at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle near the Odaw drain in the Greater Accra Region.

The fire started around Thursday morning, destroying the structures which were used for both domestic and commercial purposes.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel intervened to douse the flames and prevent them from spreading to neighbouring structures and buildings.

In a Facebook live video around 9 a.m., Public Relations Officer Alex Narteh confirmed that the fire had been extinguished.

“Despite some damages to some wooden structures, the situation has been contained and prevented from further spread. There is a warehouse right behind this slum which could have caught fire but for the intervention of our officers, the fire was contained from spreading.”

In all, he said over 50 structures were saved from the fire.

He pointed to accessibility as one of the challenges the firefighters faced.

“It is close to the Odaw River so accessibility was difficult. The officers had to park behind the wall around the warehouse to come all the way here. There is no way the fire tenders could have been able to come here.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
