12-hour Curfew Imposed on Bawku

Nine days after the curfew on Bawku and its environs was reviewed to nine hours- 8:00 pm to 5:00 am- the Ministry of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has reviewed it again.
This is on the backdrop of Wednesday’s clash between police officers and some youth in the town, claiming one life and leaving five others injured.
In a statement, the Ministry said the curfew hours had been reviewed to 6:00 pm to 6:00 am effective Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
This decision followed the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument.
Additionally, he announced a total ban on all persons in the affected communities and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon as he vowed to arrest and prosecute perpetrators.
The Minister also used the occasion to call on Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the lingering chieftaincy dispute.
He further suggested the use of non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.
Wednesday’s violence resulted in damage to some properties including two police vehicles and the official and private residences of policemen in the Binduri.
As part of efforts to restore calm, the Service said military and police officers have been deployed to town.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has since departed for Bawku to personally ascertain the security situation on the ground.
He was accompanied by operations, investigations and intelligence officers.
