A demyelinating disease is any condition that causes damage to the protective covering (myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve fibres in your brain, the nerves leading to the eyes (optic nerves) and the spinal cord, according to Mayo Clinic.
It adds that when the myelin sheath is damaged, nerve impulses slow or even stop, causing neurological problems.
The condition may result in vision loss, muscle weakness, changes in bladder and bowel function, changes in sensation, muscle stiffness and spasms among others.
The condition has no cure but can be managed with therapies.
