Works And Housing: Government To Introduce Ghana Housing Authority

It has been disclosed that government is in the course of establishing the Ghana Housing Authority to manage housing issues in the country.

According to the Works and Housing Minister, the authority will serve as an agency with the priority to plan and manage public housing in Ghana.

“As I speak the government is yet to bring on board Ghana Housing Authority. They will have experts with the responsibility of initiating investigations into housing-related issues as it’s being done abroad.”

Asenso Boakye explains that the Ghana Housing Authority bill lies in parliament and will be passed hopefully to cater for housing management.

He says the introduction will tackle affordable housing and its related issues. The project will also focus on making available local building materials (burnt bricks) for use.

The minister said, “We have come to the realization that several issues contribute to the high cost in building and housing”. We don’t have any institution that can generate means to reduce the cost of building. So that the local building materials will be available in the country such as burnt bricks.”

He noted that the ministry is responsible for making policies and for that matter the intention to introduce Ghana Housing Authority to make life feasible.

“The government will also look at subsidizing housing in order to make feasible the provision of land and electricity at site meant for developers so as to reduce the cost of building.”
