Transport Minister Denies Sacking Ghana Airport MD; MD Says He Remains At Post

The letter purported to be written and signed by the Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, communicating the termination of the appointment of the Managing Director (MD) of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has been discredited by the former.

The minister of Transport, in a letter dated February 2, 2022, to the Board Chairman of GACL, and copied to the secretary to the Vice President, Chief of Staff at the Jubilee House, and secretary of the president at the Jubilee House, said the president had issued the directive.

However, in a media interview with CNR, seemingly irritated Kwaku Asiamah belied any letter of that sort.

The MD of the GACL on the other hand, in a media interview in Parliament, said he hasn’t received any termination letter.

“I don’t know what you are talking about. My appointment has not been terminated”, he stated and added that “When I get to that bridge, I will cross it”, when asked if he would be surprised if the news is true.

Although the reason for his termination was not relayed in the letter, some staff members of the company had been advocating for his removal over allegations of incompetence.

Additionally, this comes days after business tycoon, Daniel McKoley (McDan), had his new private jet terminal shut down by the Ghana Airports Company over issues of regulatory breaches, a few days after it was launched.

Reacting to the breaking news, a former Deputy Minister of Information, Felix Kwakye Ofosu tweeted, “For standing up against clear wrongdoing in the matter of the private jet lounge at the Kotoka International Airport, the GACL CEO gets fired by President Akufo-Addo who has proven to value his cronies more than due process and compliance with rules”.

Yaw Kwakwa rose from the position of the Deputy MD of GACL to MD in January 2019 when the appointment of his former boss, John Dekyem was terminated.
