THREESEC Teachers On Sit-Down Strike
Tutors at the Three Town Senior High School in the Volta region are reported to have laid down their tools despite the on-going West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The teachers have refused to either teach or invigilate both the on-going WASSCE practical and written papers; after a series of alleged attacks were launched at the teachers and some of the non-teaching staff from the side of the third-year students.
The President of the school’s Old Students Association, Mr. Ali Anabi Issa, told Citinews a teacher was allegedly stabbed by a student while another student threatened the life of a security personnel in the school.
“The teachers are on sit-down strike, they have threatened not to invigilate and they have threatened not to teach if nothing is done about the situation. A teacher was stabbed and the student was handed over to the police, he was granted 30,000 cedis bail. Yesterday they were in court again and he pleaded not guilty. The case has been adjourned to next week for prosecution to start. There was another incident where a student whose phone had been taken from him, iPhone 12pro, threatened the life of the security man on duty and that boy has also been arrested. He was actually remanded in police custody till yesterday when he was granted bail to the tune of 30,000 cedis with 2 sureties”, Mr. Anabila recounted.
He said the Regional Police Command had established a police patrol team on the school’s campus while the tutors were being engaged to reconsider their decision and take up their tools.
“We are still in talks with the teachers, we understand their situation, and we know very well that they don’t feel safe looking at the series of incidents that have happened in the past, they feel their lives is at stake. We are still appealing to them”, he said.
As a way of assuring the staff of their safety, he said parents of the final year students will meet on August 25, 2021, while the final year students will be made to sign a bond.
