24-Hour Economy Could Ease Government Payroll Burden – Hon. Millicent Amankwah

The Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, has argued that the introduction of a 24-hour economy could help address Ghana’s rising unemployment while reducing the strain on the government payroll.
Speaking in an interview, she noted that with approximately 800,000 workers already on the government payroll, it has become unsustainable to rely solely on public sector employment.
She believes a shift towards a 24-hour economy, where businesses and industries operate around the clock, would create more job opportunities without increasing the financial burden on the state.
Hon. Amankwah cited advanced economies where industries run in shifts—morning, afternoon, and night—to maximise productivity and employment. She stressed that Ghana must adopt a similar approach to provide jobs for more people, particularly the youth.
She also observed that many Ghanaians working abroad willingly take on multiple shifts, yet there is resistance to the same concept being implemented locally. She encouraged citizens to support the initiative, arguing that its successful adoption could drive economic growth and improve living standards.
According to her, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to rolling out a 24-hour economy aligns with the need for alternative employment solutions in Ghana’s evolving job market.
