Seven Arrested For Invading AngloGold Mine
Seven persons are in the grips of the police for invading the underground northern areas of AngloGold Ashanti Ghana’s Obuasi Mine in the Ashanti Region.
They were arrested on Monday while making an exit.
In a press release, the company said, “Obuasi Gold Mine’s management team has notified the relevant authorities and public security services and is working closely with them.”
It was after the indulgence of the police the seven were arrested. They are currently in the custody of the Ghana Police Service.
It added, “Any unauthorized person underground is encouraged to leave the mine at any time by the exit points where public security personnel remain on standby.”
It continued, “Intrusion of illegal miners into underground areas remains a significantly dangerous activity and AngloGold Ashanti Ghana is working alongside authorities to ensure that only authorized mine personnel and contractors can access underground work areas.”
It has been reported that over 100 illegal miners unlawfully entered the working area underground in search of gold. They had been there for almost a week embarking on their objective until they ran out of food supply.
They are reported to have sent signals to their family members who have since stormed the area.
One woman who told the media his husband was among the “trapped” said the intruders fear being arrested and have therefore chosen to stay in there.
According to her, her husband was recently released from five weeks in remand after embarking on the same escapade.
“My husband is in there. There is no job here in Obuasi. We never had education and so this is what we do for survival. I’m unable to reach him because his phone is off. They are hungry and weak. They are all in there. If they get out, they will be arrested,” she said.
