Police Service Vows To Conduct Thorough Investigations Into March 17 Shootings In Wa
The Accra Regional Police Command has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident that led to shootings and subsequent death of a retired lecturer on the spot and another in the hospital later, in Wa in the Upper West region.
The shooting incident took place on March 17, 2022.
In a press release, the Accra Police Command noted that the Crime Investigation Department (CID) had taken over the case.
Background
Stephen Mane, 64, a retired lecturer of the Dr Hilla Limann Technical University was shot to death on Thursday, during a scuffle that ensued between two factions of a family in Wa over a piece of land in the Upper West Region, the Regional Police Command has confirmed.
Per the Regional commander’s report, the incident transpired on the disputed plot of land which is near a Shell filling Station.
Mane is alleged to have been shot with a pump-action gun within close range by one Abdul Raman Inusah, 61, who is currently in police custody.
Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Peter Ndekugri recounted on Eyewitness News that Inusah sent workers to the disputed plot of land on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 however elders of the family sent a message to him to withdraw the workers until the dispute over the land was resolved.
There was a plan to arbitrate the said dispute on Wednesday, March 16, however, it was interrupted by a funeral rite in the house. On Thursday, March 17, Inusah sent the workers back to the site.
“According to the suspect, mob welding tools were deployed to sack the workers from the site. The workers then called Inusah on the phone to tell him what had transpired. So Inusah drove over to the site with his gun in his car. According to Inusah, the mob turned on him when they saw him so he rushed into his car, took out his gun and shot to scare the mob away, injuring the deceased in the process.
“When the police arrived at the scene, he had shot and scared away the mob so he was arrested”, DCOP Ndekugri said.
The Upper West Regional Police command further discredited media reports that the deceased was serving his car at the filling station when a stray bullet hit him.
The family of the late Mane in an interview, monitored by opmesuo.com however stated that contrary to the narrative put out by the police, their father had no dispute over any land, nor was he in any way related to the said Inusah.
