Police Reject Proposed Venue and Time for Dumsor Vigil

Yvonne Nelson’s “Dumsor Must Stop” vigil has suffered yet another setback following the Accra Police Command’s protest against the venue and time originally set for it.

After a meeting with the Regional Command on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the police have objected to plans to picket at the Revolution Square.

The police explained that the square is opposite the seat of government which is a security zone.

“That the Jubilee House which is directly opposite the Revolution Square is the seat: of Government and therefore a security zone, thus the protest and picketing at the Revolution Square may endanger public defence, public order, and public safety and violate the rights and freedom of other persons.”

Additionally, it objected to the organisers’ decision to close the protest at midnight.

“That the proposed time of midnight for closure may compromise security which may lead to violence, endanger public defence, public order, public safety, public health and the running of essential services,” it explained in a letter addressed to Yvonne Nelson, Selorm Dramani Dzramado and Henry Osei Akoto after the meeting.

Demo
The demonstration scheduled for May 25 is an idea of actress Yvonne Nelson and a repetition of one that took place in 2015 against the John Mahama administration at the peak of erratic power supply.

The recurrence in the era of the Akufo-Addo administration has been described as “alarming”.

In a statement on April 30, 2024, she expressed her concern about the trend which is taking a toll on businesses, saying “In light of these troubling developments, I have taken to social media to reach out to Imani Ghana, who supported the initial DumsorMustStop Campaign, to explore the possibility of organizing another vigil. We must come together once again to demand accountability and action from our leaders.”
