Over 18 million Ghanaians Expected to Vote on December 7
The Electoral Commission (EC) has provided an overview of the country’s electoral roll ahead of the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.
It pegged the total number of valid voters in the register at 18,774,159 in a press statement issued on November 12, 2024.
This includes 18,640,811 Voters on the Biometric Register; 131,478 Special Voters; and 1,870 voters without Biometric Data.
It explained that the biometric voters will be biometrically verified on Election Day while non-biometric voters refer to voters who will be verified manually on Election Day because their biometric data got corrupted for one reason or another.
Meanwhile, Special voters include Security Agencies, Media Personnel and EC Officials who have Special duties on Election Day and for that reason are allowed by law to vote earlier than the Election Day.
Other Voter Categories
Per the data from the EC, 33,352 Voters are on the Exceptions List; 26,569 on the Multiples List; 2,141 voters are on the Proxy List; 310,579 Transferred Voters; and 441,173 Absent Voters.
“The total number of Absent Voters should equal the sum of Special Voters plus Transferred Voters. However, a number of Polling Stations were administratively closed, either because they did not meet the minimum voter threshold required for operation or because local communities requested the Commission to close the Polling Stations for legitimate reasons. Voters from these closed Stations were Transferred to other Polling Stations.
“Since no Register was generated for these closed Polling Stations, no Absent Voters list was created for them, resulting in 884 voters excluded from the Absent Voters List. Their records, including details of their movement, are securely maintained within the Voter Management System, ensuring full accountability,” it explained.
