Officers Who Assaulted Civilian Over Marijuana Referred To Professional Standards Bureau

The Ghana Police Service has announced investigations have commenced into the assault of a civilian in a viral video over Marijuana with the officers referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau.

According to a brief statement from the Service, the case is being handled by the Bureau.

Two Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) officers appeared in a viral video brutalising a civilian alleged to own a bag containing cannabis.

The civilian who wore dreadlocks was captured struggling to free himself from the two officers who had pinned him to the ground.

It appeared the officers wanted to force him into a car parked nearby, however, he resisted.

He kept repeating that the bag doesn’t belong to him.

In retaliation, the officers slapped him in the face and on his head and repeatedly kicked and punched him.

The Officers identified as Inspector Prince Awuah and G/Cpl. John Ahiamata will be taken through the due process of the law, the Police assured.

“The matter is being handled by the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the officers involved, Inspector Prince Awuah and G/Cpl. John Ahiamata both with the Divisional MTTD Asankrangwa have been referred to the Bureau to be taken through the due process of the law.”

The victim has also been contacted to aid in the investigations.
