Obuasi: AngloGold Ashanti Holds Mini-Clinic Durbar

Thousands of residents in the Obuasi Municipality in the Ashanti Region of Ghana have benefitted from a mini clinic durbar organized by AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, to offer free medical care to members of the community.

The exercise, which has been rotated in different communities this year in line with the health component of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), aims to take quality healthcare to the doorsteps of host communities.

The event was organized in collaboration with the AGA Health Foundation, GIZ, Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District Health Directorates, and the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation.

The occasion was also used to sensitize the people to rising cases of sickle cell anemia, hepatitis, dental disease, eye health, malaria, typhoid, and many more, and the need to test to know their status and take the necessary precautions.

Mr. Edmond Oduro Agyei, the Stakeholders Engagement Superintendent at AngloGold Ashanti, emphasized in an interview that AngloGold Ashanti remains committed to its purpose of mining to empower people and advance societies.

According to him, since 2021, the Obuasi Mine, through its community investments strategies – the Social Management Plan (SMP) and now the 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) – has organized and held about 14 mini-clinics or health outreach programmes, some of which have been held under international commemorative days such as World Malaria Day, Breast and Prostate Cancer month.

He opined that he is proud to highlight that the mini-clinics and other health screenings they have undertaken with partners beyond their quarterly health outreaches have screened and treated about 30,000 people to date.

In addition, their outfit is proud to announce that AGA Obuasi Mine has facilitated training for over 500 health workers in various health sub-specialties like burns treatment and management, heavy metals and toxins management, cervical, neo-natal, and infectious disease prevention.

He said that this would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of each person involved.

To further honour their commitment to improve access to quality healthcare in Obuasi and its environs, AGA is constructing ultra-modern health facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities within or close to their host communities.

“For example, in 2023, we refurbished and upgraded the Anyinam Clinic to a Health Centre, and currently, we are constructing a health center to serve New Dokyiwaa/Binsere communities, expanding the Akrokerri Health Centre to include a newly constructed surgical theatre, and constructing a clinic at Apitikooko.”

He said, “These will bring much-needed relief to those who must travel for good medical care, as well as provide them with access to quality care and treatment.”

On their part, the Obuasi residents who benefited from this outreach health service showed gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti and its partners for providing them with quality healthcare.
