NSMQ’21: Ashanti Region Secure A Slot At The Grand Finale
Host and Win have been on the lips of schools from the Ashanti Region since the commencement of the competition which they host for the first time.
The region has the highest representation in the quarterfinals with seven schools; three were able to walk into the semifinals: KNUST SHS, Opoku Ware School, and Prempeh College all made it to the semifinal stage on the last day of the contest and are expected to face each other at this stage.
KNUST SHS made a semis after a hard-won victory against Accra Academy and Ola Girls’ SHS when the last riddle decided the winner of the contest.
This is the second time the University Senior High School is a semi-finalist.
Between Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School are six (6) National Science and Maths Quiz trophies, with Prempeh picking four (4) of them.
The “Amanfuo” had a smooth ride at the quarterfinals, after recording a 37 points victory against their close contestants, Sogakope SHS.
It puts the “Greens” in a position to win the trophy on the Ashanti soil for the first time. Their fans who have always flooded the venue are positive about winning the trophy the 5th time.
A third trophy bid was kept alive after Opoku Ware School beat Ghana Senior High School and Oda Senior High all from the Eastern Region to join All-Ashanti-Derby in the semifinals.
“We press to kill” has been the mantra since the competition started by Opoku Ware School.
Beyond the NSMQ trophy to win, the contest will settle the old-time rivalry and also battle for the Ashanti Supremacy.
Many expect one of the two giants to represent the region at the grand finale, but the NSMQ 2021 has taught us a great lesson about “underdogs”, either way, the Ashanti Region will have a school at the grand finale but will have to “show working” to keep the trophy in the region.
