NIA Calls For SIM Re-registration Deadline Extension

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has called for an extension of the deadline for the SIM card re-registration exercise currently underway in the country and scheduled to end on March 31 after which unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated.

Key in the re-registration exercise which began on October 1, 2021, is the use of the National Identity Card known as the Ghana Card, without which one cannot re-register.

Days to the end of the exercise, the NIA, the department with the mandate to issue the national ID cards and manage the National Identification System (NIS), has called for an extension of the March 31 deadline.

“For the SIM card re-registration, they should look at the time frame and extend it. A lot of people haven’t received their cards”, Head of Administration and Human Resources at the National Identification Authority (NIA), Cecilia Erzuah said.

She explained that “there are people who did double, triple, fourth registration, and the system has arrested their card. All these cards have to be released. We need to work on them at the back end otherwise all these people will lose their SIM. Some Ghanaians used to be foreigners and have entered the database as Ghanaians, but when they go (to re-register), MTN refuses to accept their pin because of the prefix.

“I think they should extend it to the end of the year. What is the rush for”.
