No plans to close down Manhyia Local Prison – Prisons Service dismisses rumours

Authorities of Ghana Prisons Service (GPS) says there is no intent to collapse the longest correctional centre in Ghana, Manhyia Local Prison, which is located in Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
“Ghana Prisons Service has no plan to close down Manhyia Local Prison. Maybe previous conversation around it didn’t go well and people misunderstood us”, Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of GPS, Mr. Richard Bukari assured.
According to the PRO who spoke on Kumasi-based Opemsuo FM, hosted by George Opoku Mensah dubbed: “Nkwantananso” show, it will be a great disingenuous for the Service to take any decision good or bad to close down Manhyia Local Prison.
“Before the existence of all the prisons across the country, Manhyia Prison was there already and that will be ungrateful to Asantehene if anyone thinks we should close it”, Mr. Richard Bukari strongly denied the rumours.
The Manhyia Local Prison was originally a sublet of the Asantehene’s Palace. Its original function was to accommodate people who committed crimes and were found guilty by the Asantehene’s Court.
In 1954, the Government took over the management of the facility and gazetted it as one of the prison establishments in the country.
The Prison is located in Kumasi, at Manhyia Palace. The Prison has a total surface area of 0.001221 km. The inmates’ population is made up of convicts and debtors. The building contains six cells and seven offices.
