My Son Needs Daily Bread- Mother of Teenager With Amputated Leg

Salamatu Mohammed, mother of the 15 years old who sustained gunshot injury during the clash between security personnel and some residents of Ejura has called for assistance from government.
Until the recent incident, Madam Salamatu Mohammed said her son was an apprentice in a mechanic shop and described him as very fit.
However following the incident, Mohammed Awal was shot and has gotten a leg, surgically removed.
The woman in a testimony before the Three Member Committee probing the shooting incident noted that she needed help to cater for her son.
“He was fit with his two legs but one of his legs have been amputated. What I am pleading for from the authorities is that you assist my son so that he can get daily bread for himself. Because from now onwards, I don’t know what the life of my son will be”, she said.
She emphasisized that his son was not one of the protesters.
“When we came (from Kaaka’s burial), my son told me he was hungry because he had not eaten since morning and I gave him money to go and buy food. “
“Not so long after I had given him the money, he set out and after ten minutes, I was told that he had been shot and had been taken to the hospital.
“I rushed to the hospital. He was in a critical state and I was restrained from seeing him. Later when I was allowed in to see him, I saw his leg seriously injured. “
“I asked him what happened and he told me while buying the food some military men stormed the place and suddenly he felt he was going down. Only to open his eyes to find himself in a hospital. “
“My son was referred to Duayawnkwanta hospital where an amount of Ghc1,500 was demanded to perform a surgical operation on him. My son was taken to the surgical theatre on Thursday. When the doctor observed my son’s leg he said he couldn’t continue with the said operation. “
“He proposed that my son be taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. “
“At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the doctor told us he could not do anything about it (his leg) except to amputate it. “
“My son is still on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and he is being attended to by the doctors,” she reported.
