Minority Condemns Military Use Of Brutality In Fight Against Illegal Mining

The Minority in Parliament has described as despicable, unfortunate and reprehensible, the use of brute force by the military in the fight against illegal mining in the country.

The Minority led by John Jinapor cited a recent case on July 15, 2022, where he said the military resorted to the use of torture, in-domain treatment, and abuse human rights in the arrest of some alleged illegal miners on the concession of Anglogold.

“We are well informed that on the 15th of July the military arrest some suspected illegal miners on the Anglogold field and subjected them to torture, in-domain treatment, abuse of their human rights, amongst others.

“The minority finds this development most unfortunate, disturbing and we strongly condemn the use of brute, excessive and disproportionate force in the so-called fight against illegal mining”, he told the Parliamentary press.

He also decried the silence of the government at indicident.

“This flagrant disregard of our laws and constitution under the Akufo-Addo-led government is most unfortunate and must be roundly condemned in the strongest terms possible. We find this incident despicable, we find this incident unfortunate and we find this incident reprehensible. Even more disturbing is that the Akufo-Addo-led government remains mute following this incident. This is a heinous crime meted out to ordinary Ghanaians”.

The minority is thereby demanding a probe into the incident.
