Medeama SC Hit By FIFA Transfer Ban
Ghana Premier League side Medeama Sporting Club has reportedly been banned by the international football governing body FIFA from signing new players.
The ban will be in place until the Club honours its obligations to Ahmed Toure, its former player.
The Club will no longer be able to sign new players both nationally and internationally.
“We take due note that in its correspondence, the creditor informs us that the respondent, the club Medeama SC, has not complied with its financial obligations in accordance with the decision of FIFA. In this regard, we wish to inform the parties that a ban from registering new players internationally has been implemented by FIFA as of today,” FIFA is quoted to have said.
“Moreover and in accordance with the aforementioned decision, the respondent’s member association (Ghana FA) is requested to immediately implement on the respondent, the club Medeama SC, a ban from registering new players at the national level,” it added.
Background
Medeama SC handed down a suspension to Ivorian player Ahmed Toure- who joined the Club in January 2021 on a two-year deal- for disrespecting Abdul Umar Rabi who was head coach of the Club at the time. Before that, he had been slapped with a fine of GHC1,500 for misconduct in 2021.
The player, therefore, dragged the Club to FIFA alleging he had been unfairly treated.
Investigations by FIFA found the Club guilty in January this year and ordered them to pay 60,900 in owed bonuses while they settle the player for breach of contract with GHC 40,600 {totalling GHC 101,500} within 45 days.
“Pursuant to art. 24 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, if full payment (including all applicable interest) is not made within 45 days of notification of this decision, the following consequences shall apply:
“1. The Respondent [Medeama] shall be banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, up until the due amount is paid. The maximum duration of the ban shall be of up to three entire and consecutive registration periods.
“2. The present matter shall be submitted, upon request, to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee if full payment (including all applicable interest) is still not made by the end of the three entire and consecutive registration periods,” the ruling in January said.
The Club is yet to react to the development.
