Mahama: The Dollar Has Arrested Our Vice President

One question on the mouths of many Ghanaians, especially members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is the whereabouts of Ghana’s economist Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

A recent demand for his take on the ailing economy of Ghana comes from the former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.

At the launch of the Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) App at the campus of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra yesterday, John Mahama brought up the question of Bawumia’s location amidst the rapid depreciation of the cedi.

“The Akufo-Addo led government that came to power on the back of mouth-watering promises to make life easier for Ghanaians and ensure rapid development of our country has so badly mismanaged the economy that, we have been plunged into the most debilitating economic crisis in about four decades. Indeed we all recollect some of those mouth-watering promises including one by the current president to transform this country Ghana in eighteen months. This crisis into which he has led us has born hardship and suffering for our people on a scale never witnessed in the thirty-year history of our fourth Republic.

“Daily price increases, fuel price adjustments, a nose-diving currency which has rather arrested the person (Bawumia) who said he would arrest it. The dollar has rather arrested him and so we are looking for him (Bawumia) but we can’t find him. I asked the IGP if he had the key so that we could find where our Vice President was. He (IGP) said he (IGP) doesn’t have it and he (IGP) doesn’t know his (Bawumia) whereabouts. General incompetence, corruption, and waste of scarce resources have combined to make life simply unbearable for generality of Ghanaians.”

The head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team (EMT), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has not been heard for quite a while on the economic downturns, the inflation rate, depreciation of the cedi to the dollar, and the incessant fuel price increases.
