Kwabena Duffuor: NPP Passed E-levy Despite Hardship Of Ghanaians

Former Finance Minister, Kwabena Duffour has decried the passage of the Electronic Transfers Levy (E-levy) bill by the Parliament of Ghana yesterday March, 29.

According to him, the passage of the bill did not come at the right time- a time of inflation sponsored by hikes in fuel prices and poor cedi performance against other currencies.

Describing the bill as unpopular, Kwabena Duffour said the New Patriotic Party government ignored the concerns of the people by worsening their woes with another levy.

“The NPP has progressed in their passage of the unpopular e-levy bill. May it be on record that despite the hardship of the Ghanaian people and disaffection for the e-levy, the NPP ignored these concerns and added to our tax burden”, he posted on Facebook.

The bill was successfully passed by the Majority Caucus of Parliament following a walkout by the Minority, an action many Ghanaians are displeased with and called “betrayal”.

Prior to the passage of the bill, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta during a presser said the government was going to impress on Parliament to pass the E-levy bill and other bills pending before the House.

The amended version of the bill was passed at a rate of 1.5%.

The Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, after the passage of the bill, stated that the passage of the E-levy bill was a step in the best interest of Ghanaians.
