KNUST Student Recycles Plastics Into Diesel
Emmanuel Kwadwo Nimo, a level 200 History student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has successfully recycled plastic waste into Diesel Fuel.
The young Ghanaian believes his innovation can be used in Ghana to reduce the incessant rise in the price of diesel which is contributing to the general inflation rate in the country.
At a presser, he demonstrated the use of his innovation to power a generator plant to produce electricity.
In an interaction with the media, he said, “I tested it with a generator plant which uses diesel. No one was willing to lend their cars for the test so I came to my master who lent out to me his generator plant which he uses to generate electricity.”
His aim now, he says, is to get it to the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) for testing and certification for mass production.
“I have successfully recycled plastics into diesel. I now have to send it to the Ghana Standards Authority to verify and legalise it so that the high price of diesel on the world market and in the country can be controlled. I used plastics in the ocean and drains which pollute the environment.
“I have figured out my plan to produce it on a larger scale if the GSA accepts it.”
Data shows that Ghana produces 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually with only 9.5% of that collected for recycling.
Kwadwo Nimo is of the strong opinion that the plastic wastes which pollute the environment can be assembled for profitable ventures.
