KNUST Consults Rent Control About Hostel Fee Impasse
Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Students Representative Council for KNUST, Raff Arthur has disclosed that the school is consulting the department of Rent Control in beating down cost of off campus hostels.
The students announced their ordeal in the cost of hostel fees after they staged a protest last week.
In a reaction to this, management of the school issued a release saying it was interacting with the managers of hostels that had increased their prices between twenty and ninety-four percent.
The deputy SRC PRO in an interview on Kessben radio said the school has exhausted all means in trying to negotiate with the managers.
According to him, the school has decided to take the issue on the side of the law and so has resorted to the department of Rent Control.
“The problem at hand now is that most of the hostel managers say they want to change their facilities, others are saying that they want to increase the price because they want to increase the quality of their hostels but the truth is that most of them aren’t going to do anything.
“The school will be taking it from the side of the law because it’s absurd for hostel managers just to increase prices based on how they feel without being regulated.
“The recent conversation is with Rent Control and government to make sure that they regulate these hostels because these hostels fall under the section of the law and government and Rent Control itself because they normally increase hostel price by ten to fifteen percent but this year is very bad”, he disclosed.
