GPRTU: We Wanted To Announce New Lorry Fares Yesterday But We Swallowed It

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has postponed the increment in transport fares for a week following a newly scheduled meeting with the Transport Ministry on April 11, 2022.

The Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro disclosed that the leadership of the union called a press conference yesterday, April 5 to announce the new prices they had coined but had to cancel it after the Ministry of Transport sent a delegation to them.

According to Imoro, the union wrote a letter to the Ministry on March 17 offering a 15% price adjustment in transport fares and inviting it to a meeting for deliberation on March 21, but the Ministry did not reply to that, nor did it honour the meeting.

But the GPRTU noted that on April 5, “The transport ministry sent a delegation to us and pleaded for not responding swiftly to our letter and that the Minister requested to meet us on coming Tuesday for final settlement on the lorry fare issue. After lengthy deliberation, our leadership accepted, so our aim for today’s meeting was postponed.”

The GPRTU says it is not considering an increment that is less than a 15% increment.
