Gov’t To Engage Media Owners Over Salaries Of Journalists

The government of Ghana says it will continue to engage with owners of media houses over the salaries, economic and working conditions of journalists in the country.

This was disclosed by the Ministry of Information as one of the means of promoting press freedom.

This, MoI said is “to address the RSF’s concern about the poor economic conditions of most journalists in the country”.

When it comes to the safety of journalists, it said the government will collaborate with the National Media Commission to deepen the execution of the Coordinated Mechanisms as well as education for state and non-state actors on the safety of journalists.

Additionally, it said the government will collaborate with stakeholders in the fight against disinformation and the spread of fake news.

The government has found with the new report of RSF that the country’s performance in two of the five parameters that earned Ghana its 60th position on the global front in Press Freedom, was a result of the poor scores in the Economic context and the Safety of journalists.
