Ghana To Use Chip Embedded Passport

Barely twelve (12) years since the introduction of biometric passports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional integration has disclosed Ghana will upgrade to a chip-embedded passport this year.

According to the Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, plans for the migration are far advanced for the rollout.

She noted that the Ministry of Finance is, at the moment, considering the new initiative for its possible rollout soon.

“Plans are far advanced for Ghana to migrate from the current biometric passport to chip embedded passport. The chip-embedded passport is being undertaken through a public-private partnership agreement. The agreement relating to the new system is currently being considered by the Ministry of Finance and the rollout is expected to be done in the course of the year”, she said at a press conference.

Shirley Ayorkor indicated that the introduction of the system will largely enhance the security features of Ghana’s passport in line with the standards prescribed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Ghana introduced biometric passports in March 2010.
