The Ghana Education Service (GES) has constituted a list of conditions under which qualified teachers in the public sector will be granted Study Leave With Pay for the 2022 academic year.
Approved Courses For Study Leave With Pay
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English Language, Physical Education, French, Special education, Ghanaian Language, Guidance and Counselling, Early Childhood, Religious Studies (CRS), History, Visual Arts, Vocational Education courses, Technical courses, Government, Geography, Economics, Music and Laboratory Technician are the approved courses for Study Leave with Pay.
Applicants for study leave with pay, according to the GES, must have a record of 3 years of satisfactory service to qualify for it.
Additionally, an applicant who has served in a designated deprived area for two years may be eligible for consideration for a grant of Study Leave With Pay.
Also, a non-professional graduate teacher should have served at least a year before qualifying for the Post Graduate Diploma in Education course.
In addition, a staff of the Service returning from secondment must serve a minimum of two years before qualifying for Study Leave With Pay.
The GES also notes that “Staff of the Service who vacate, leave the service and are re-appointed/re-engaged must serve a minimum of five years before being eligible for Study Leave With Pay.
“A staff who does not qualify for the grant of Study Leave With Pay in the first year cannot apply again in the second year of his/her studies. The staff must apply for Study Leave Without Pay to pursue the course.
“Staff who is eligible for Study Leave With Pay must have a minimum of two years to serve after the course. For example, a staff who is fifty-five years and above cannot apply for Study Leave With Pay to pursue a course that lasts for years or more. He/She can, however, apply to pursue courses that have a duration of between one and three years”.
Above all, an applicant qualifies for a Study Leave With Pay if he/she is of good conduct and performance and is recommended by the immediate supervisor.
Salary Allocation During Leave
Per the statement from the GES, teachers who teach Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English language, Physical Education and French will be eligible for 60% of their salary while on Study Leave With Pay.
On the other hand, teachers who teach Special Education, Ghanaian Language, Guidance and Counselling, Early Childhood, Religious Studies (CRS), History, Visual Arts, Vocational Education courses and Technical courses will be apportioned 30% of their salaries while on the leave.
Tutors of Government, Geography, Economics, Music and Laboratory Technician will receive 5% of their salaries while on leave.
Application For Study Leave With Pay
An applicant for Study Leave With Pay should obtain an application form from the Metro/Municipal/District Education offices, the GES noted.
The applicant must then fill out the application forms which are in four and attach “certified true” copies of certificates.
Next, the application form must be submitted to the applicant’s Regional Director through Metro/Municipal/District Director/Head of Institution (2nd Cycle).
