Feeding Persons In Police Custody Is Responsibility Of Gov’t; Police On Rejected Vormawor Donation
The Tema Regional Police Command has noted that feeding persons in police custody are the sole responsibility of the government of Ghana and as such, is done according to the laid down procedures and law.
“We wish to state categorically that the Police are held responsible for whatever happens to persons in our custody, and for that reason, we take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety. We, therefore, do not accept food from any source except families and people nominated by the suspects being held in custody for that purpose”, the police pointed out in a statement.
This comes on the back of a rejected donation from the fixthecountry convenor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who was, until last week, detained in police custody for allegedly threatening to overthrow President Akufo-Addo.
The activist, according to the police, visited the Ashaiman Police Station with some items to donate to his immediate past cellmates.
Prior to that, the police say, it instructed him through his lawyers not to make any donation, but that instruction fell on deaf ears.
“In spite of the notice given him, he showed up at the police station in the company of some other individuals and a musical band with the obvious intention still of making the donation and creating unnecessary drama”.
The statement from the police came after Vormawor took to his Facebook page to announce to the world that an order from above to the Ashaiman Police personnel had charged them not to accept his handout to persons in police custody.
He added that the police had called him to come for some 40 bags of water he had earlier given out to inmates in the same station, an allegation the Tema Command has denied.
“We have just been informed by the Police hierarchy that the Ashaiman Police Station has been instructed not to accept the donations to Oliver Barker-Vormawor’s former cellmates.
“As we understand, the Officers have been informed that if we persist with the donation, the Police are under instructions to say that there is no senior officer to receive the items.
“We already delivered 40 bags of water to the Police before the information came through. We have been called to come back for the water.
