Everyone Should Be Worried; Ablakwa On Demolition of Bulgarian Embassy

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has registered his displeasure at the demolition of the Bulgarian Embassy located at Kakramadu Road, Plot No. 10, East Cantonments in Accra in 2017.

As if that was not enough, he has called on all Ghanaians to be worried about that development that has been hit by impunity.

According to the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Ablakwa, the action of the private developer in demolishing the embassy can buy sanctions for Ghana since it violates the 1961 Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

Additionally, he said the cost in rebuilding the facility, when the need arises, will be at the expense of Ghana and not the private developer whom he identified as Dr Yaw Adu Ampomah, President Akufo-Addo’s appointee at the National Development Planning Commission.

Ablakwa referenced the demolition of Nigerian High Commission property in June 2020 and the happenings after that to make sense of his worry.

“We should all be deeply worried. This happened with the Nigerians and it almost triggered a war. The Nigerians declared it as a war. Their foreign minister put up a tweet threatening to take out Ghana from Abuja.

“Our president had to quickly call President Buhari and apologise. As part of the compensation package, Ghana is rebuilding that Nigerian edifice that was pulled down. The people who demolished the Nigerian High Commission properties got away with it, no sanction, no punitive measures and it is the poor Ghanaians who will pay for it”, he said in an interview on Eyewitness News.

He claimed the demolition exercise is a “complicity”.

The incident which took place in 2017 has been resuscitated by the minority in Parliament who are calling for a full-scale Parliamentary probe into the demolition and bring the perpetrators to book.

The demolished area was, until March 16, being developed into an apartment complex, Ablakwa confirmed.
