ECOWAS Demands Release of Ousted Burkina Faso President
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is demanding, as a matter of urgency, the release of ousted Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore who is in military holding.
The former president was arrested and detained in a barracks in Ouagadougou, reports indicate.
Following the Extraordinary ECOWAS summit in Ghana yesterday, the Heads of States decided to demand the immediate release of Kabore without condition.
“The Heads of States have decided to request the immediate release of President Roch Marc Christian Kabore without condition. The heads of states were firm to make it quick”, the president of the ECOWAS, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou announced.
The ECOWAS Heads of states also agreed to request the military authorities to propose a timetable for the restoration of constitutional order as soon as possible.
Jean-Claude said the Authority decided to maintain the suspension on Burkina Faso from all ECOWAS institutions to affirm the condemnation of this coup d’etat.
The decision was reached after a review of two different reports from two missions that were sent disjointly to Ouagadougou to assess the security situation on the grounds were presented at the summit yesterday.
Roch Marc Christian Kabore was president of Burkina Faso until he was ousted on January 24 by the military led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba.
