CHASS Calls for SHS Reopening Date Extension over Debt
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has advised the government to reconsider extending the vacation of schools if it is unable to settle all debts and charges before the reopening date.
In a letter to the Minister for Education, the CHASS acknowledged a recent release of funds but stated that it was inadequate to cover all recurrent monies owed schools; arrears for perishable items; funds for single-track and day students; distribution of foods and utility bills.
These bills, it noted remain critical to the reopening and smooth functioning of second-cycle institutions on January 3.
It has therefore called for their disbursement on time or the extension of the vacation.
“We believe that these funds are critical in the successful reopening of schools on January 3, 2025. Without these resources, heads of schools will face insurmountable challenges in managing daily operations, providing quality education and ensuring the wellbeing of students.”
It furthered, “We therefore serve notice that unless all outstanding monies as stated above are released to schools before the reopening date scheduled for 3rd January 2025, we will advise against the resumption of the academic calendar.”
