ChaLog Says Prez Akufo-Addo Has No Right To Suspend Sekondi-Takoradi MCE

The Chamber of Local Government (ChaLog) has described President Akufo-Addo’s directive to suspend the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) as null and void.

In an interview with CNR, the president of the ChaLog, Dr. Richard Fiadomor outlined that the power to suspend MCEs is reposed in the assembly by the constitution.

“The power to suspend is with the assembly and not with the president. The president should have just drawn the attention of the assembly that his conduct has dragged the name of the assembly into disrepute and the assembly would have passed Chief Executive through what we call the Public Relations and Complaints Committee. Because of Natural justice, we have to hear his side of the story.

“Now the committee will make recommendations to the General Assembly and then the General Assembly can vote to suspend him because he is a member of the assembly.”

“The president’s action is of nullity, it’s of no effect so technically speaking, the Chief Executive can go to work any day”, he said.

The ChaLog president recalled that in 2017, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly suspended the Member of Parliament for Tema West.

“On the instruction of the president, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Sekondi-Takoradi Assembly, Mr. Abdul Mummin Issah has been suspended from office with immediate effect pending an inquiry into his encounter with the police on February 3, 2022”, a statement from the Minister for Local Government Decentralisation and Rural Development announced.
