Calm Returns To KNUST After “Needless” Clash

The Ghana Police Service has reported that calm has returned to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

This follows a violent clash between students of the University and Unity Halls of the University on Thursday, August 18, 2022.

“The Police have restored calm on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology following violent clashes between students of the Katanga and Unity Halls of the University”, the Service reported

Opemsuo radio’s Kwame Owusu Akyaw reports that there are about one thousand police personnel currently on the campus.

It is reported that the clash between the two halls sparked when members of the University hall decided to break an age-old tradition that bars members of the two halls from using each other’s precincts during processions.

Videos and pictures from the scene showed both sections pelting stones and other objects at each other, injuring some and vandalising properties as well.

Ahead of the clash, the Ashanti regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah issued a statement to the effect that he had gotten intelligence that some persons were planning to “disturb the peace of the University”.

The Minister warned that such conducts will be addressed with the “legal instrument of the state”.

Although no arrest has been made, the Police service says efforts are underway to arrest the perpetrators.

“The Police are in firm control of the situation and investigation is ongoing to arrest those behind this unfortunate, needless and unjustifiable attacks and bring them to face justice.”
