Another Anti-galamsey Protest Hits Ghana

Another youth and activist group has hit the streets of Ghana to register their distaste against illegal mining activities and demand the immediate release of Democracy Hub protesters from custody.

The three-day protest began on Thursday, October 3, 2024, and is being undertaken by a group calling itself Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey.

It follows last week’s protest which turned chaotic and ended 54 in police and prison custody.

The group will march daily from Okponglo, located near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, which will serve as their meeting point. They will proceed through the Okponglo Traffic Light towards the Shiashie/Standard Authority Traffic Light, passing through Shangrila and continuing to the Airport Traffic Light. From there, they will turn right onto the road leading to Association International School, then proceed past the National Service Secretariat and arrive at the Kawukudi Traffic Intersection.

After this, they will travel along the Kanda Highway to the Accra High School Junction, passing the Electoral Commission Office and Ridge Hospital. The march will continue through the AU Roundabout towards Parliament House, then through Osu Cemetery, and will finally conclude at the car park of the Accra Sports Stadium.

The protesters clad in black and red outfits are matching under heavy security scrutiny.

Some placards on display read, “Your silence means you support their atrocities…”, “The country is not for personal gains. If you can’t serve it, leave it”, “Free the citizen”, “Greed is killing Ghana”.

Fifty-four protesters who hit the streets of Accra from September 21 to 23 have been remanded into prison and police custody for at least two weeks for alleged unlawful assembly.

A section of Ghanaians have called for their release criticising the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General for the arrest and prosecution.
