Current Levels Of Hardship Is Dire But Suicide Isn’t An Option; Mahama Reacts To Driver’s Mate Electrocution

The former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has reacted to the death of a 24-year-old man at Ngleshie Amanfrom in the Ga South Municipality of Greater Accra Region, saying suicide is not the answer.

Last Friday, a young man identified as Kofi Kakra died when he climbed a GRIDCO pylon at Galilea in the Ga South Municipality and got electrocuted in what appeared as a suicide.

Eyewitnesses said the bus conductor- who often visits a pub nearby with his driver- on that fateful day went to the neighbourhood and began climbing the pylon amidst complaints about hardship.

Pleas to have him descend failed which necessitated a call for police assistance.

Officers arrived at the scene but failed to persuade the young frustrated man to descend.

He later got electrocuted in an explosion which threw him down from the pylon.

He died after a few minutes and was conveyed to a morgue by the police.

Mr Mahama in a social media post on Wednesday said he was welcomed home with the “sad” news.

“I returned from a trip to hear the sad news of Kakra who killed himself by electrocution.

Conceding that the current economic hardship is “dire”, he ruled out suicide as an option, noting that hope must be kept alive.

“The current levels of hardship in Ghana is dire and probably the worst we have ever experienced in the last three decades, but suicide is never the answer.

“Even in the darkest night, there will always come the dawn. The sun will rise again. Let’s be each others keeper. Let’s keep hope alive!”, he said in his first social media post after returning from trips to the United States and Ethiopia.

Mahama was in Virginia, USA, for the 500 CEO Summit organised by Liberty University, where he was the guest of honour.

He was later in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, for the 10th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.
