Aide To Adwoa Sarfo Says The MP Is Expected Back In Few Days

An aide to the lawmaker dominating recent public discourse, Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, has noted that the Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament is expected back into the country within a few days.

In a media interview, the MP’s personal assistant, Nana Dubin Kwapong recalled that the six months absence of the lawmaker was undertaken with permission from the presidency.

“As we speak now, she is out of the jurisdiction and should be in town in the next few days. Sometime last year she sought a leave of absence from the presidency to deal with a few personal issues. Sometime in November, she had to come to town to support government business on the floor of Parliament and then left at the end of December”, he said.

Her absence seems to be biting quite hard at the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) with calls intensifying for her constituency’s seat to be declared vacant by some of her colleagues.

The Director of Communications for the NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa is quoted to have said, “her issue is now so glaring because of the fine margins we have in parliament now, in the days where there were clear majorities with huge numbers, it wouldn’t have been an issue”.

In a media interview, the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, confirmed that Adwoa Sarfo had demanded the position of the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, in return for her presence in Parliament, and blatantly registered his displeasure at that.

Meanwhile, the opposition NDC have preyed on the occasion recalling instances where some NPP MPs absented themselves from Parliamentary proceedings for more than twelve months without their seats being declared vacant.

“It would be interesting to see the NPP make a move for Speaker to declare the Dome-Kwabenya seat vacant. Btw 2019 and 2020, the NPP MP for Lower West Akim, Hon Kyei Baffour was missing for over a year from Parliament yet no such move was made. (simplyearth.com) Principles versus Expediency”, MP for Ninigo Prampram, Sam George tweeted.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu Constituency tweeted, “Between October 26, 2021; two important NPP MPs; Ken Ohene Agyapong and Henry Quartey who is also Greater Accra Regional Minister were absent without permission from the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Alban S. K. Bagbin, for 18 working days each.

“I am perplexed and wondering in all sincerity, the basis for the discriminatory and unprincipled attacks on Sarah Adwoa Sarfo…particularly from Ken Ohene Agyapong who is equally guilty of the same offence he’s been raving and ranting about”.

According to Ablakwa, the Privileges Committee of Parliament must consider the cases of all the three MPs and not just that of Adwoa Sarfo and therefore, Ghanaians must prepare for by-elections at Assin Central, Ayawaso Central and Dome-Kwabenya Constituencies.
