Aflao Residents Demand Reopening of Country’s Borders

Residents of Aflao in the Ketu South District of Volta Region are set to protest against the closure of Aflao border and other land borders in the country today, Friday 27, 2021.
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo announced the closure of the country’s borders in March, 2020.
The residents say they wish their lives will go back to normal since the Coronavirus pandemic is not leaving anytime soon and thereby hope the government reconsiders putting suitable measures in place to deal with the pandemic.
“COVID may not be going any time soon looking at what we are being told. With variants appearing everyday it is obvious that COVID has come to stay. If we all understand it in that manner, I think our management of COVID will fast track the economic aspect of it. The economic effect the closure of the border is having on we the border residents, that is why we are saying government should consider putting measures as they have done at the airport”, Mr. Bright Dzili, spokesperson of the residents said on Eyewitness news.
He indicated that, “Most of us, our livelihoods are in Togo. People from Aflao work at the harbour in Togo , our farmlands are in Togo, some of our families are in Togo” and added that most business transactions have come to a halt.
The demonstration will begin at Denu junction and converge at the Victoria Park where a speech will delivered and a handing over of petition to the Municipal Chief Executive will be done.
Mr. Dzili confirmed the police have given them the greenlight for the exercise and assured that all Covid-19 safety protocols will be adhered.
