Advent Of The 1992 Constitution A Major Factor To The Depletion Of Chieftaincy Powers – Obiri Boahen

Legal Practitioner, and former NPP Deputy General Secretary, Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen has said the advent of the 1992 Constitution has contributed immensely to the depletion of the powers wielded by the Chieftaincy institution.

According to him, no individual or entity specifically or intentionally struck off the powers the chieftaincy wields but upon the arrival of the constitution reduced the excess role of the institution.

Speaking on the Nkwantananso show with Agudey, Nana Obiri Boahen stated that the Chiefs have also not been proactive enough in making sure that their mandate and powers as chiefs are protected.

He said that before a judgement passed by the Supreme Court in 2010; it was an offence to fail to honour an invitation from a chief. When this power was struck off from the Chiefs, Nana Obiri Boahen said he admonished several Chiefs to seek an Act to back their mandate but failure to do so is weakening the chieftaincy institution.
