A/R: Wontumi, COKA Files Nomination For Chairmanship Race

The two most popular candidates tipped for winning the upcoming Chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have filed their nomination forms for the most talked-about contest.

The Elections Committee of the NPP set yesterday, 17th May 2022, as the deadline for filing nomination forms. No specific date has been set for the elections; however, the committee has between 17th and 29th May to hold the exercise.

With the filing of nominations, the race is now clear for the two front-liners; the incumbent Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, and Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, widely referred to as COKA to battle for the Chairmanship position in the Ashanti Region.

While Chairman Wontumi is seeking his 3rd term as Ashanti Regional Chairman, COKA on the other hand who has been a five-term Constituency Chairman of the Afigya Kwabre South is seeking to be elected for the first time as Ashanti Regional Chairman.

Both sides have already hit the ground running as they reach out to delegates with their campaigns.

The ruling New Patriotic Party began its reorganization early this year with the election of Polling Station Executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, and recently the elections of Constituency officers.

For the camp of COKA, a new but competent leader, new direction, new hope, and unifier as Ashanti Regional Chairman is non-negotiable regarding the current circumstances surrounding the party to be able to break the eight (8) in 2024.

They attribute the results of the 2020 Parliamentary and Presidential election results to apathy and mismanagement of the party by the current Chairman, urging delegates to vote for a positive change to maintain power.

On the other hand, Chairman Wontumi’s camp believes they should be maintained if the party really wants to retain power after superintending over two successive electoral victories for the party as Regional Chairman.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Region Election Committee Chairman, Hon Simon Osei Mensah who happens to be the Ashanti Regional Minister has promised a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
