A-G Calls For Application Of Adamu Sakande Sanction On Jame Gyakye Quayson

The Attorney General, Mr. Godfred Dame has called for the application of sanctions that befell former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Adamu Dramani Sakande on James Gyakye Quayson for repeating the offence.

His submission came after the Supreme Court in a 5:2 ruling ordered James Gyakye to stop holding himself up as a Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency.

James was challenged by a resident of Assin North, Ankomah-Nimfah, at the Cape Coast High Court over his eligibility to stand for an election.

Subsequently, the court annulled the election on the basis that he owed allegiance to another country (Canada) other than Ghana, contrary to Article 94(2) of the 1992 Constitution and ordered for a fresh election in the constituency.

Although James has appealed the ruling, Ankomah-Nimfah went to the supreme court seeking an injunction against James to stop holding himself as a legislator.

Addressing the journalists after the ruling of the Supreme Court in favour of the injunction today, April 13, Godfred Dame, who has also dragged James to the Accra High Court on five counts of forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office, noted that there ought to be an even application of the law.

He referenced the case of Adamu Sakande, who was a Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Constituency but got a 2-year jail sentence for committing perjury and forgery.

Sakande was alleged to have, before the 2008 elections, made a false statement in an application to have his name registered in the voters’ register and subsequently went ahead to vote in the December 2008 general elections when he was still a citizen of the UK.

“I think there ought to be even application of the law. The same fate that befell Adamu Dramani Sakande- he was not qualified at the time that nominations were opened and we all know what happened to him. He was subsequently declared ineligible and for that matter, his seat was taken away so there ought to be even application of law, what happened to Adamu Dramani Skene of the NPP has to happen to the gentleman of the NDC who has fallen foul of the same law.”
