Lady Julia: Menstruation Is Not A Taboo

Her Royal Highness, Lady Julia Osei Tutu who is also the Patron of Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation (TLGF) has tasked girls to accept menstruation as a physiological journey in their lives and not a taboo.

She empowered them to be bold enough and face the world in the face of the stigma related to menstruation because it is not a strange act.

She however cautioned that when it comes to the hygienic aspect, it must not be taken for granted so as to be free from any hindrances to reaching their goals.

“You girls need to be bold to be able to face the future and the world ahead of you. Menstruation is not a taboo, it’s not something out there that is so strange but it’s just a physiological milestone in the life of every young girl. We need to embrace menstruation just take care of the hygiene aspects that goes with it so that as young girls you can reach your full potential in school and outside.”

She encouraged reporting of cases of sexual abuse too on their side.

In her speech as the special guest at the Menstrual Hygiene and Sexual Abuse Talk held at KNUST to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day which falls on May 28,2022, she noted that the nation is in the right direction in terms of fighting the stigma around menstruation.

“As a nation we are in the right direction as we are educating ladies.”


The occasion on the theme,“Breaking the Silence” saw in attendance the President of TLGF, Nana Ama Adutwumwaa, DSP Afia Tenge,the President of the STEM initiative, Prof Ibok Oduro,Dr John K. Bosomtwe and other regional educational officers.

The Menstrual Hygiene and Sexual Abuse Talk was attended by Junior and senior level students from about 30 schools including KNUST SHS, Weweso M/A JHS,Sacred RC JHS, Atuabo Basic School amongst others.
