Rebecca Akufo-Addo: Gender Equality Doesn’t Translate Into Reality
The 1992 constitution guarantees the rule of law, equality before the law, and protection of the Fundamental Human Rights of all, however the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Rebecca Akufo-Addo has noticed that when it comes to the aspect of equality before the law, in the sense of gender, it is delusional.
Speaking during the celebration of 2022 International Women’s Day (IWD) at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on March 8, Mrs. Akufo-Addo conceded that a milestone has been established when it comes to gender equality, inclusiveness and removal of biases.
She however indicated that gender disparities remain while women’s representation still lags in politics. We have been in a long-standing struggle, she pointed out.
According to the first lady, “Our constitution guarantees gender equality however, women still face inequality directly and indirectly through stereotypes in social practices, simply put, gender equality before the law does not translate into reality”.
She, therefore, charged the youth to take over the baton from the old and forge their destinies and the world they hope to live in.
“It is time for you to negotiate your way to equality… Your voice is integral to who you are, how you use it is vital to you becoming the person you want to be. Use your voices to create the change you want. Imagine the world you want to see and create the world for yourself and the generation after you.”
At the discussion were dignitaries including Lady Julia Osei Tutu, wife of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, First lady of Ghana, Samira Bawumia, Second Lady of Ghana, Akosua Frema Opare, Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Traditional rulers and other dignitaries.
It was also graced by High schools including St Monica’s Senior High School, T. I Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Opoku Ware School, Anglican Senior High, St Louis Senior High School, Kumasi Wesley Girls, Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School, Kumasi Girls Senior High School, and others.
