John Dumelo Predicts Hike In Tomato Prices
Actor cum farmer, John Dumelo says Ghana should expect an increase in tomato prices in the coming days.
The forecast follows the closure of borders of Ghana’s leading supplier in tomato, Burkina Faso.
The politician explained that with Burkina Faso’s current state, traders from Ghana won’t be able to access the ready market of Burkina Faso, however, he says the vegetable will be smuggled into Ghana thereby affecting its pricing.
“Very likely prices of tomatoes will increase in the next coming days. Burkina border closed( coup), market queens can’t cross the border again to buy. The use of unapproved routes to smuggle the tomatoes in will affect the prices.”
The closure of the border is premised on the recent military takeover in the francophone country.
According to the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies, Ghana imports over 100,000 tons of tomatoes annually from Burkina Faso alone.
