E-levy: Parliament Adjourned Until Jan. 18

The Parliament of Ghana has agreed to suspend the Electronic Transactions Levy policy and proceeded on recess today, December 21, 2021.

The House is expected to reconvene on January 18, 2022.

The Majority leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, today in parliament suggested that the House adjourn and resume next year to call for cooler heads after the Parliament House turned “a boxing ring” at midnight over the controversial Electronic Transactions levy popularly known as E-levy.

“Where we are, if we take adjournment, for cooler heads to come back to this House, then we come back to continue transactions of business in a much more serene environment. In that regard, Speaker, I will invite you to adjourn the house so that we come back on the 18th of January to continue business”

The motion was seconded by the Minority leader, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu who proposed that the House should embark on further consultations over the levy the government is seeking to introduce.

“Mr. Speaker, it’s important that we carry the country along and we need to demonstrate to the country that our democracy is growing and we will not suffer some of the unacceptable shades and spectacle we’ve witnessed on the floor.

“Mr. Speaker, the leader has suggested, I only can concur that you adjourn the House for further consultation on the outstanding issue. Thankfully, appropriation has been passed so the minister can keep the country running and keep the ministries running. I second the motion for adjournment”, he stated.

The motion was then adopted after the Acting Speaker of Parliament and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei-Owusu called for a voice vote.
