Work Comes To A Halt On Takoradi PTC Interchange

Workers on the three-tier Takoradi Interchange have laid down their tools and staged a demonstration at the premises of the office of the contractor, Messrs SinoHydro Corporation Limited.
The workers complained of poor conditions of service and are therefore demanding for improvement.
The warehouse officer and spokesperson of the aggrieved workers Philip Kogi Owoo told Citinews that the ¢19 daily wage is nothing to write home about.
The workers on the sidelines noted that the initial wage was pegged at ¢30.
“As construction workers, what we are being paid is not worth it therefore we are demonstrating. We are also looking at is our conditions of service. First of all what we are being paid is ¢19 averagely. We have to also know the job categories, how much each worker is taking (salaries), we don’t have off-days, no money for tranportation, no water provided for us on the site, no food provision, no medical service and we are threatened with expulsion without compensation on the least mistake”, Owoo said.
He noted that the team was not returning to the site until they are given the needed attention and their demands addressed.
“We tried to sit with them and discuss but they are not giving ear to what we are saying. Until they respond to us, we are also not going to stop this demonstration. We are going to demonstrate until our voices are heard and the best is done for us”, he sasid.
Addressing the workers, the contractor advised them to select five delegates for dialogue with management and find solutions to their grievances in conjunction with the Western Regional Co-ordinating Council(WRCC)l.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, cut sod for the construction of the interchange which marks the Region’s first, in October, 2020.
