Election 2024: Gov’t Orders Closure of Ghana’s Land Borders
The Minister for Interior, Henry Quartey has ordered the temporary closure of the country’s land borders.
In a press statement issued on December 6, 2024, the Minister said the measure will be effective till December 8 evening.
“This temporary closure is with immediate effect and ends at 6:00 pm on Sunday, 8th December 2024.”
The measure, it said, was part of measures to ensure the integrity of the December 7 General Elections.
It, therefore, urged travellers to bear with measure.
“The Ministry urges all citizens, and travellers to and from Ghana, to cooperate with State Security Agencies enforcing this directive.”
A section of Ghanaians have condemned the measure.
“I think it’s irresponsible to close the country’s borders. It infringes on many people’s rights. From all indications, the ruling government knows they are losing so they are trying all sorts of things but we are equally prepared,” National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate John Dumelo told the media.
