Let the CJ Come and Enforce Her Order- NDC MP

The Member of Parliament for Keta Constituency, Kwame Gakpey, has challenged the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, to come to Parliament and enforce the stay of execution order she delivered last week against the Speaker’s declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant if she so wills.

He interprets the action of the Chief Justice as an interference and posits that the Judiciary has no right to interfere in the business of Parliament.

“The Chief Justice should come to Parliament House and enforce this ruling. Parliament is a master of its own rules. We have three arms of government. This is parliament. We do things based on the Standing Order and the Constitution. The Speaker has ruled and we are complying with it,” he told JoyNews in an interview in the Parliamentary Chamber on October 22, 2024, amid the struggle for supremacy in the House.

Many are predicting confrontation between the NPP and NDC sides today as the House convenes for the first time since four seats were declared vacant tilting the balance of power to the NDC with the Supreme Court subsequently delivering a stay of execution order against the decree.

As the NDC side vows to “jealously” protect their earned majority status, the NPP side says the House has reverted to its previous status in their favour with the court order.

The House awaits other members and the Speaker to make the ultimate decision on the development.
