Final Phase of the Appiatse Housing Unit Starts in October
The government has announced plans to commence the third and final phase of the Appiatse Redevelopment Project, two years after the deadly explosion in the Western Region.
A statement signed by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on September 17 said the project will start in October and is hopeful it will be completed for commissioning in time.
It, however, did not provide any timeline for the completion.
“This phase will complete the resettlement of the affected residents. We wish to put on record that the Government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is committed to ensuring that the 3rd and final phase will be completed in good time.”
The Ministry used the occasion to extend its appreciation to all donors, contributors and the people of Appiatse for their unflinching support and cooperation.
Earlier this year, the Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned the first phase of the project which encompassed 124 housing units and auxiliary facilities for the victims.
Background
On January 20, 2024, a vehicle carrying about 10 tonnes of mining explosives to the Chirano Mines collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the detonation of the explosives in the community which lies between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
One hundred and ninety casualties were recorded including 13 lives lost while 384 persons were displaced.
